ENVIRONMENTAL LAGOS PLATFORM CHARGES LAGOSIANS TO MAKE CITIZENS DEMANDS
Environmental Lagos Platform; an organization serving as a social-bridge between government and citizens of Lagos State; in the actualization of efficient service-delivery, has urged Lagosians to make Citizens Demands lists available to chairperson-elects across the 57 LGs and LCDAs in Lagos State.
This is coming in the wake of the local government elections conducted in Lagos State on the 24th of July, 2021.
Speaking to environmentallagos.org, the coordinator of the platform; Lanre Roland; said broad-level discussions amongst citizens indicated that; if we have LGs/LCDAs performing just 30-50% of their duties, as noted in the Constitution, it would be a vast complement to the efforts of the other tiers of government, and there would be a notable improvement in Lagos State.
Pointing to the fact that; local government contestants hardly have manifestos and they just ride in on their party’s political standing, Roland said; “As long as parties do not impose standards of performance on the candidates; leaving each candidate to govern by themselves, then citizens must hold the candidates accountable.
If you come forward to serve, the buck stops at your table for your actions during your tenure.”
“Since contestants hardly have plans and hardly do engagement campaigns, where they visit unions/organizations encapsulating the citizens and present their intentions, it is imperative that citizens draw up lists of achievable demands and present to the incoming chairperson.”
“This action can be done by CDAs/CDCs, aggregate representational organizations, etc. Periodic tracking mechanism would be embedded, which would cover relevant inquests into delays and give support and encouragement; as needed.”
Environmental Lagos Platform believes effective grassroots action is a key to delivering encompassing dividends of governance and reducing the needless friction/skirmishes that have come to characterize Lagos State, as citizens groan in avoidable oblivion and marginalization.
