BROKEN SLABS AT ONIRU ROAD (Four Points by Sheraton junction)

The report on this spot came in on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Alarmed by the portion where the report said more than 20 vehicles have suffered a similar fate (of damaged tires), we paid a visit to the location on Saturday, August 16, 2025

On getting there in the morning, we took images of the spot and observed for a while.

From observation, if you are not used to the area, you would likely run into the holes and suffer a burst tire from the iron protrusions.

This situation would be made worse at night

Due to the bad spot which has narrowed the accessible width of the road, vehicles have to move very slowly in order to navigate that portion of the road. For trucks, it is harder to pass.

The resultant effect is a stretch of traffic.

Taking from words and actions of the PS, Urban Development (Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development), where; for years; he has been an advocate and practicer of state development through joint efforts of citizens and government, and based on the objectives of ELP (making things better…), we approached the management of Four Points by Sheraton; as they were the closest corporate entity.

We pointed out that some of the vehicles coming through the bad spot were actually coming to the hotel, and the effect on such patrons; if they experienced damage to their vehicles.

The management explained that it is a recurring issue which they have made one of their Corporate Social Responsibilities.

They said, after replacements; the slabs get broken after a while due to heavy-duty trucks passing through

They also said they have tried iron grates, but these were stolen.

Expressing their concern and commitment, they acknowledged that governments’ efforts would be needed for a longer-lasting solution and they have tried reaching out.

They also said they would discuss more on the issue at their next management meeting.

RECOMMENDATION

If the same slabs are the ones repeatedly broken, it would seem the issue is that of pressure by heavy-duty trucks as they slow down at the point of turning.

This would mean those particular slabs would need to be more reinforced than the others.

The state government can bolster the CSR efforts of Four Points by Sheraton by sending a dedicated engineering team from the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, in order to find a lasting solution to the issue.

The timeliness of this effort would save damages to more vehicles and further improve the response rate of government to citizens needs.
